ERCOT electricity prices remained relatively moderate during June 2026 as strong wind and solar generation, stable natural gas prices, and adequate operating reserves helped limit average prices despite increasing summer demand. Price volatility increased late in the month as hotter weather drove higher air-conditioning load, producing more frequent evening price spikes when solar generation declined. Looking ahead, electricity prices are expected to increase during July and August as Texas enters the peak summer season. Forecasts for above-normal temperatures and record electricity demand are expected to tighten reserve margins, increasing the risk of elevated real-time prices and occasional scarcity events, particularly during periods of extreme heat, low wind generation, or transmission constraints. |

PJM entered July with a clear reminder of the market's tightening fundamentals after last week's record-breaking demand pushed system load above 166 GW, leaving reserve margins at some of their thinnest levels in years. While the grid performed reliably, the event highlighted the growing challenge of balancing increasing electricity demand with limited new generation and ongoing thermal retirements. Attention will also turn to PJM's 2028/2029 Base Residual Auction, although few expect a meaningful pricing surprise given existing price caps remain in place. For the remainder of July, weather will continue to be the primary driver of price volatility, with any additional periods of extreme heat capable of quickly tightening reserves, while natural gas market fundamentals and storage trends will also influence power prices. Overall, the outlook remains supportive of elevated forward pricing as structural supply constraints and tightening reserve margins continue to define the PJM market. |

PUCT Officially Approves ERCOT's "Batch Zero" Process
The PUCT formally approved ERCOT's new Batch Zero process for evaluating large-load interconnection requests, primarily from AI data centers and other major industrial customers. Instead of reviewing requests one by one, ERCOT will evaluate a large group simultaneously to improve transparency and protect reliability while supporting economic growth. This is one of the most significant ERCOT market design changes of 2026. Public Utility Commission of Texas

PJM Nears Record Demand as Heat Wave Stresses the Grid
PJM is operating under a Maximum Generation Alert and Load Management Alert as extreme heat pushes electricity demand close to record levels. The grid operator says all available generation is being called upon to maintain reliability, underscoring how quickly AI data centers, electrification, and weather-driven demand are tightening reserve margins.
