ERCOT recently set new all-time demand records above 91 GW without issuing emergency alerts, demonstrating improved system reliability despite historically high summer loads. Looking ahead, forecasts call for continued above-normal temperatures across much of Texas over the next several weeks, keeping cooling demand elevated and supporting a constructive outlook for wholesale power prices. Robust solar generation and expanding battery storage have helped moderate midday prices and maintain healthy operating reserves, the evening net-load ramp has continued to produce periods of elevated real-time volatility and localized congestion. The greatest upside price risk remains during prolonged heat events, lower-than-expected wind generation, or unplanned thermal outages that could tighten reserve margins and drive higher real-time prices. |

PJM enters August after navigating multiple heat waves throughout July, including a record-breaking demand event that pushed system load to approximately 168 GW, surpassing the previous all-time peak set in 2006. While the grid maintained reliable operations throughout these periods of elevated demand, wholesale electricity prices responded sharply during peak load conditions, highlighting the market’s growing sensitivity to extreme weather and tightening reserve margins. The recently completed 2028/2029 Base Residual Auction largely met market expectations, reinforcing the long-term challenges posed by accelerating load growth, ongoing thermal generation retirements, and delays in bringing new generation online. As the region moves through the final month of the summer cooling season, weather will remain the primary driver of price volatility, while natural gas fundamentals, generation availability, and ongoing structural supply constraints continue to support elevated forward pricing. |

Natural gas prices have been on a roller coaster this week as global events continue to influence the market. Ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran have disrupted liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, creating uncertainty about global energy supplies and putting upward pressure on prices. Earlier in the week, hopes that shipping routes could reopen caused prices to dip, but those losses were short-lived as hot weather increased demand and U.S. natural gas storage levels grew less than expected. The latest Energy Information Administration (EIA) report showed that 28 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of natural gas was added to storage, compared to the 35 Bcf analysts had expected. In simple terms, that means more gas was being used than anticipated, which is generally supportive of higher prices. However, overall U.S. storage remains above the five-year average, meaning there is still plenty of gas in reserve to help meet demand and prevent sharp price spikes. Looking ahead, traders will continue to watch global events, weather forecasts, and storage levels. At the same time, lower-than-normal gas inventories in Europe and continued competition for LNG supplies could keep upward pressure on prices as winter approaches. |

Texas Halts New Data Center Grid Connections Pending State Audit
Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) and ERCOT to conduct a comprehensive audit of every data center currently seeking to connect to the Texas grid. No new projects will move forward until the review is complete. The audit will examine projected power demand, water usage, on-site generation, tax incentives, and community impacts. ERCOT currently has roughly 474 GW of large-load requests in its queue—more than five times the state's current peak demand. The move signals a major shift toward ensuring reliability before approving massive new electricity loads. Houston Chronicle The Wall Street Journal |
ERCOT Sets Another Demand Record—and Keeps the Lights On
Texas reached a new all-time electricity demand record of 91,308 MW during July's extreme heat while avoiding conservation requests or rolling outages. ERCOT credits expanded battery storage, additional solar generation, and new natural gas resources for helping meet the record demand. The story illustrates how dramatically Texas' generation mix has evolved since Winter Storm Uri, but ERCOT officials caution that future AI-driven load growth will require significant additional generation and transmission investment. Data Centers Continue to Dominate Texas Energy Policy
The combination of today's audit announcement and ERCOT's recent Batch Zero large-load interconnection process demonstrates how AI infrastructure is becoming the defining issue in the Texas electricity market. The new Batch Zero framework groups projects of 75 MW or larger into a coordinated study, replacing the previous first-come, first-served approach. ERCOT says the process is intended to fairly allocate transmission capacity while maintaining grid reliability as unprecedented demand enters the system. ERCOT |
